Five books I’ve enjoyed this year

Each year I set myself the challenge on goodreads to read over 50 books, here are five I’ve particularly enjoyed so far this year.

When Harry dies he always returns as a child with all the knowledge of his previous lives. When another of his kind tries to change history Harry works out a plan over several lifetimes to try and stop him.

22524717

an interesting very detailed story of a violent age, a few too many
battles for me but I’m glad I persevered with it!

So many things I remembered in this little glimpse back to my childhood

When a child’s bones are found on a desolate beach , Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson calls Ruth Galloway for help. Nelson thinks he has found the remains of Lucy Downey, a little girl who went missing ten years ago.

The bones actually turn out to be two thousand years old, but Ruth is soon drawn into the Lucy Downey case and into the mind of the letter writer Then another child goes missing and the hunt is on to find her and bring her home safely.

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her she is strapped into  her  wheelchair with a gun pointed at her. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Another book I wouldn’t normally have picked up but it drew me in, I wanted Melanie to survive.

10THINGS

it’s that time again, the months just seem to fly by. This month I thought I would share ten books I’ve read this year.

1.     13496

Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure what more could you want.

2.     9736930

Imagine waking up each morning with no memory, having to learn who you are and          what has happened to you only to know you will have to go through the same thing the next day, really enjoyed this one.

3.    9226039

A chilling story, well written and hard to put down.

4.   6892870

The final story in the trilogy, loved it.

5.   8630300

Another psychological thriller, I want to find more by this author.

6.   3613997

Always a favourite author of mine.

7.   6251052

One afternoon, single mother Sara Weston says she's going to the store and never returns, the book keeps you wanting to find out more.

8.   9397394

This book tells the story of the last turbulent years of slavery and the early years of freedom in nineteenth-century Jamaica.

9. 7456085

Sibling love and devastating revenge make this a good read.

10. 6578507

What would happen if a letter was never delivered? Found this one a bit slow to be honest.

cooking

13258190

My daughter bought me this book for Mother’s Day and I have read it from cover to cover. I love the idea of parents handing down treasured recipes through the generations and always think if they are family favourites they must be good. last night I tried the carbonara recipe which looked a bit odd as you used cottage cheese, it was so easy and delicious, definitely one to try again. I have a list of recipes I want to cook, from her coronation chicken to little biscuits and profitoroles, all look easy enough for me to try.

Latest book

3463650m This is my latest read and I'm really enjoying it. The Boleyn family were certainly very ambitious and used their young daughters shamelessly. Younger sister Mary comes across as a much nicer person while Anne wants the top prize and will trample on anyone to get it.

we had a good day yesterday going to a retired folks "youth club" !! I rediscovered my liking for table tennis and Ian's irritating habit of putting spin on the ball.!

lazy!

plain-truth-400

Over on UKS there is a cybercrop with some lovely classes to do but I'm afraid I have been lazy. It's so nice outside I've been sitting in the garden reading this book after finishing Atonement this morning.

I keep telling myself not to worry about points but just enjoy doing the classes as and when I feel like it.

I loved Atonement although I found it very sad. It's set in the 1930's and then up to the present day. A young girl's evidence sends a man to prison for something he hasn't done and the book shows how she deals with this and how it affects others.

new book

51R3aBHAr7L__SS500_

I've just started a new book, the second in the Hunger Games trilogy and having enjoyed the first book I'm looking forward to reading this.

ca43c27a02a08e5c166c7110_L  Finished this one yesterday and despite it being unlike my normal reads I really enjoyed it. I had to tell myself off though for shutting my eyes during some very embarrassing bits, how silly was that!!

It's been a lovely day here again and we were out early to feed the chickens and then on to play bowls. We were there in plenty of time so went for a walk by the sea so I was in a good relaxed mood. That means there was no excuse for me playing so poorly, I was just bad!

This afternoon I've been out in the garden again sowing courgettes, strawberries, cosmos, pansies and violas, my greenhouse is looking very busy at the moment.

I am reading ...

9WED This is my latest book from the TV book club list. A biography of an ancestor of the Queen Mother's. Having been pampered by a doting Father and left an enormous fortune she gets tricked into marriage and is treated terribly. I'm still waiting and hoping that as the title suggests, he will get his comeuppance as he really is a nasty man!

We had a lovely day out in Canterbury yesterday ending with a meal at a curry house which was really yummy. My baby is now 26yrs old and even worse my eldest will be 36yrs soon, I really am not old enough!!

A good day.

mum

I’ve been busy today making my card for this weeks challenge and also playing around with digi again. This is a photo of mum posing, I think it’s at Portland Bill. I used some elements from Jessica Sprague and blue rhapsody papers from Divine Digital.

51FADimqSUL__SL500_AA240_ I’ve also started reading this book as it was recommended on The TV Book Club as  I finished  Labyrinth yesterday.  That was an enjoyable read if a tad long. I would have liked a bit more of the modern story and slightly less of the earlier one but then I do like a good thriller.

Book Club

SDC10211 I watched this programme last night http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-tv-book-club and quite enjoyed it. I do wish though that the more interesting people on there were given a chance to speak!!

It has however made me get out this journal, a present from Sue, and start a new page for the year. I’ve been on the library site and reserved a couple of their books,as had 14 people before me, and I’m going to try and broaden my reading.

thehostcover This is the book I am reading at the moment and after a slow start I am really enjoying it.

Rare picture

It has been a beautiful day today, it started out very frosty then has been cold but bright. Ian and I decided to take advantage of it and go for a stroll down to the sea, hence the very rare picture of me, I must have been in a good mood!
The real reason for the photo is the crop tomorrow, we are doing a mini scrapbook and Jenny gave me the idea to do a day in my life. After photos of my morning cuppa, the frost, shopping etc I thought I needed something a bit more interesting so when Ian suggested a walk, just after I came back from work, for once I was keen, I needed those photos of the sea!
Have got a new author recommended by a friend at work,M.C.Beaton. It sounds like Midsummer meets Miss Marple so it should be good, the heroine is 53, plain and a stocky figure, sounds too close for comfort!

Peaceful Sunday!

the children came round this morning as usual and as usual a certain little fellow managed to stay for a curry and football! Ian made the curry and I made a weetabix cake and lemon flan.
Lemon Flan
1pkt digestive biscuits
2 tbsp sugar
3oz marg
tin condensed milk
1/2 pint double cream
3 lemons

crush biscuits, melt marg, mix together with sugar
spread into flan dish
whip cream, condensed milk and lemon juice together until thick
spread over biscuit base
chill in fridge for 4hrs

this pudding has proved popular with all my guests and even a cream hating son!

Peace reigns now as the spurs game is about to start!

have decided to keep a record of my scores for mousebreaker sudoku, today was not so good as I got 636, hope to improve on this over the weeks.

Finished 2 books recently, one a light weight novel from my daughter called Ten steps to happiness by Daisy Waugh, which I have to say I quite enjoyed and finished in a few days. marks out of 10 - 6
The next book was Avenue of poplars by Elizabeth Daish, this started quite well but became a bit silly at the end. Marks out of 10 -5

Sudoku Champ

Phone rang this morning at an extremely early hour causing me to leap out of bed in a panic, with just cause as it happens as it was Jenny to tell me our scrapbook kits had to be bought a.s.a.p. We got the last two so I will forgive her the phonecall.
Got my lowest score on sudoku yesterday, 297, I was 11th when I did it so I was very pleased, today I got over 350 so not so good, wasn't long ago I was happy to get it under 1000!!
Reading a very good book at the moment by Michael Ridpath, called On the edge. He hasn't written many books so I am pleased when I find another one of his, can recommend it to those who like thrillers.
Marks out of 10 - 8
