memories

31 jan

I was quite young when my grandmother, on my father’s side, died. I can’t really remember much about her apart from she taught mum how to make a sad cake which I loved. At the weekend mum found this crocheted mat that she had made over 50 years ago and knowing I love things like that, gave it to me. I wonder if anything I make will be treasured in the future, I do hope so.

away!

27TH (2)

Poor mum has not been well for a few days so we have been away looking after her. I did manage to take my daily photo, this one of mum waiting in the hospital, she was more worried about her weight going up!

27TH

She had another appointment for a scan the next day, thankfully there were no clots in her leg.

29th jan

Feeling a lot brighter, we were able to leave mum and come home.

30th jan

bitterly cold we were still determined to go for a walk, we felt we needed the exercise after all the sitting around we have done.

SDC11492

We walked along this bay.

SDC11485

the sea looked very cold.

SDC11487

you can just see the wind farm in the distance.

SDC11494

we had a look round the Farmer’s Market.

SDC11495

and bought some cheese and onion bread and eggs.

Then it was back home in the warm as quickly as we could!

Dickens walk

23 jan

Charles Dickens lived here for a while and wrote part of Bleak House. There is evidence of his brief stay everywhere.

SDC11452

Today we walked along the top of Stone Bay.

SDC11453

This is the Coastguard House.

SDC11454

Bleak house.

SDC11455

Home of Charles Dickens.

SDC11461

Seagulls can be very annoying, especially when they knock on the kitchen door for food. Sometimes though they look just right!

22nd jan

another easy recipe for when it’s too cold to spend long in the kitchen and they are crying out for something sweet’

Melt a little butter in saucepan, add 1 tablespoon caster sugar and shake in a few drops of vanilla essence. Cook until sugar melted then add some frozen berries. Heat up till fruit has thawed and it’s nice and warm. Pour over ice cream or add to custard or yoghurt.Even my fruit hating husband loves this.

Also my next class from Hummie on blending masks.

SDC11420

Had to share the recipe I found on this blog http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/2011/01/cheesy-nibbles.html

It really was that easy, three ingredients mixed together and cooked. I put out warm from the oven while the boys were watching football and the plate was soon empty – hate to think how many calories though!

such a dull day!

21 jan

Another one of those miserable days so nothing to do but drink coffee…

and scrap. I got my inspiration from the latest free class over on 2peas, using the sketch provided and another Sarah’s Cards kit – We R Memory Keepers Maple Grove collection.

Just the two of us

20th jan

Our friends couldn’t make it to bowls today so we decided to go on our own, I think it helped!

credits: Simply Sarah Designs

Yesterday Jenny and I went to see The King’s Speech and I really enjoyed it. I don’t know much about our last King and having seen the film really admire him, the thought of having to give speeches in front of millions of people is bad enough but when you have a terrible stammer as well it must have been awful. I also had quite a romantic idea of his brother, giving up his throne for the woman he loved, but he came across as a very selfish, shallow person. I think the country was better off without him.

jigsaw

19th jan

SDC11440

Ian had this jigsaw from Sue and Rog for Christmas and really enjoyed doing it. Talking to mum yesterday and trying to sort out her worries I felt it was just like doing a jigsaw, gradually during the course of the conversation I took little pieces and put them together to make, what I hope was an accurate picture of what was going on. Being 87yrs old is not very easy, it can be a lonely and frightening place. We are all going to get older, the thought of that can be a bit scary too.

18/365

18th jan

We have a few things on our minds at the moment so it’s always good to get away from it for a while and walk by the sea. This time we went to Botany Bay, fortunately the tide was out so we could have a walk all along the beach, lovely!

let Ian take a photo today, don’t know what happened though as I know I’m not that old in real life!!!

What a difference a day makes!

16th jan

It’s windy but lovely and sunny here today and I feel ready for anything!

We decided to get out while we could so went for a walk along Ramsgate harbour.

SDC11407

This little boat was one of the many that sailed to Dunkirk to rescue soldiers during WW2.

SDC11413

I tried an “arty” photo here!

SDC11411

More boats including one that supports those people silly/brave enough to swim the English channel.

SDC11416

A tiny sailors church.

SDC11418

I was intrigued by this building called Home for Smack Boys. Apparently it was the only one in the country, built in the 1800’s to get the young boys off the streets who were almost press-ganged into working on the smacks (boats) They got into all sorts of mischief if left to roam the streets, not much has changed there then!

SDC11419

and finally this memorial to some brave fighter pilots who never made it back during a skirmish in WW2.

These walks are making me more aware of our history and I can’t wait to do more.

walk two

wk 2

I bought a new kit from Dawn Inskip today called snapshots and couldn’t resist using it for my next walk layout

15/365

15th jan

Such a miserable day today, no chance of going out for a walk and snooker on the tv!!! I took a few photos out in the garden but it is looking pretty miserable too!

I had a go at making a collage of the photos on Picasa and thought I would use that as my photo today, had to try and cheer myself up somehow!

typical Friday

14th jan

I always like to clean the house ready for the weekend but today it was a struggle, I wanted to stay in bed!

credits: Simply Sarah Designs

SDC11400

When I’d finished I got out the December kit from Sarah’s cards and did this layout. The photos are very old ones and not that good but I’m determined to scrap my past a bit more this year. I’d seen a free class on 2peas about using stamps more so made my own embellishments from a banana frog set I won before Christmas. I used a sketch which came with the kit for inspiration.

hummie’s class

sea-air

Trying to keep up with Hummie’s class, I did this layout today. I took the colour of mum’s coat and then got the opposite colour for contrast.

My sister Sue loves this photo of mum so will be sending it to her as soon as I can!

boats

13th jan

Ian and I played bowls this morning and as always I like to take time out for a walk and a look at the fishing boats off the coast. Whenever I see them it makes me realise how lucky we are to have fresh fish available and I really should eat it more.

We lost at bowls by the way, neither of us seem to be getting any better!

missing mojo

12th jan

Ian put up a shelf for me to display my ribbons etc, hopefully it will help me start crafting again.

SDC11390

I did manage to make this card, a simple one but I need to stock up on them. I am planning to scrap tomorrow!

The sun is shining!

9th jan

This view from my window welcomed me this morning. I had been feeling a bit grumpy as I’d been woken up early with a phone call, then I looked outside and instantly felt better, it’s amazing what a bit of sunshine can do!

SDC11376

We decided to drive to Deal and go on this walk.

SDC11375

The views of the sea were lovely.

SDC11371

Walmer Castle, home of the Duke of Wellington amongst others.

SDC11381

We even went for a walk on the beach, but resisted the temptation to paddle!
